Bloomer, Benge Lead Chargers’ Sweep to Open Conference Season

The Carl Sandburg College softball team opened its Arrowhead Conference season with a sweep at Kishwaukee on Thursday, winning 7-3 and 12-0.

  • Emily Bloomer connected for a three-run homer in the third inning to give the Chargers a 3-1 advantage.
  • After the Kougars tied the game in the fourth, Sandburg regained the lead in the fifth as Erin Flairty (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) led off with a double and scored on Bloomers base hit up the middle.
  • The Chargers tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh behind a Lauryn Campbell (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) RBI single, an RBI triple from Abigail Stranger (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) and a run-scoring passed ball.

Sandburg Standout
Bloomer finished 3 for 4 with a homer and knocked in four runs, including the game-winner, to lead a nine-hit attack for the Chargers.

Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) and Julia Vosburgh (Woodstock, Ill./Woodstock) each connected for solo homers in the second to open the scoring, and the Chargers never looked back.

Sandburg Standout
Benge was a beast at the plate and in the circle. In addition to her home run, she also drew a bases-loaded walk in the third and fired a two-hit shutout. The sophomore struck out two and threw 39 of her 48 pitches for strikes.
